Gau Dana — also called Godana — is the sacred Vedic gift of a cow. In the Hindu scriptural tradition, no act of charity surpasses it. At Shri Bhaavi Sameera Vadiraja Mandira and the Ruju Yogi Foundation Gaushala, Chintamani, devotees may now book Gau Dana Seva — the donation of an indigenous Desi cow with her calf, performed with authentic Godana Vidhi.
Bhishma’s Teaching: No Gift Higher Than the Cow
When Yudhishthira asked Bhishma Pitamaha to describe the ordinances of gifting kine, the grandsire recited the Godana Vidhi imparted by Vrihaspati to King Mandhatri — a ritual that existed from primeval time for the benefit of all righteous beings.
na godānāt paraṃ kiñcid vidyate vasudhādhipa | gaur hi nyāyāgatā dattā sadyas tārayate kulam ||
There is nothing higher than the gift of a cow (Godana), O lord of Earth. A cow lawfully acquired and given away immediately rescues the entire race of the giver.
— Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva, 13.75.2
The Sacred Formula of Godana
Entering the fold where the cows are kept, the giver utters the Sruti prescribed in the Mahabharata:
गौर्मे माता गोवृषभः पिता मे। दिवं शर्म जगती मे प्रतिष्ठा॥
gaur me mātā govṛṣabhaḥ pitā me | divaṃ śarma jagatī me pratiṣṭhā ||
The cow is my mother. The bull is my sire. Heaven and earthly prosperity — the cow is my foundation and refuge.
— Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva, 13.75.7
By giving away the cow accompanied by her calf, the giver becomes cleansed of all sins through identification with the cows. The merit of Godana radiates across the lineage:
गोप्रदानं तारयते सप्त पूर्वांस्तथा परान्॥
gopradānaṃ tārayate sapta pūrvāṃs tathā parān ||
The gift of a cow uplifts seven generations of ancestors and seven generations of descendants.
— Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva, 13.73.8
kāmān sarvān pārthivān ekasaṃsthānyo vai dadyāt kāmadughāṃ ca dhenum ||
By giving even one milk-yielding cow, one acquires the merit of giving away all desirable things on Earth collected together.
— Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva, 13.75.21
vedavratī syād vṛṣabhapradātā | vedāvāptir goyugasya pradāne ||
By giving a bull, one attains the merit of Brahmacharya. By giving a pair of cows, one acquires the mastery of the Vedas.
— Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva, 13.75.20
Kings Mandhatri, Bhagiratha, Bharata, Rama, and Naishadha — all attained supreme worlds through Gau Dana performed according to Vrihaspati’s instructions (Mahabharata, 13.75.24–27).
The Cow as Mother and Abode of the Divine
tathaiva gāḥ praśaṃsanti na ca deyaṃ tataḥ param | mātaraḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ gāvaḥ sarvasukhapradāḥ ||
Cows are praised thus, and there is no gift higher than them. Cows are the mothers of all beings and the bestowers of all happiness.
— Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva, 13.68.6
gāvaḥ sṛṣṭyādau brahmaṇā nirmitāḥ | tasmād gāvo brāhmaṇāḥ samāḥ ||
Cows were created by Brahma at the beginning of creation; therefore cows are equal to the Brahmanas.
— Garuda Purana (cited in dharma-shastra on Go Seva)
Sattvic Dana — The Bhagavad Gita
dātavyam iti yad dānaṃ dīyate 'nupakāriṇe | deśe kāle ca pātre ca tad dānaṃ sāttvikaṃ smṛtam ||
Charity given with the thought "It is to be given," without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, to a worthy recipient — that charity is sattvic.
— Bhagavad Gita, 17.20
Godana in Kali Yuga
In the present age, when dharma stands diminished, the scriptures recommend righteous charity as a powerful means of dissolving karma. Gau Dana — the gift of a living cow with calf to a worthy Gaushala — remains the Maha Dana par excellence: an act that transforms the donor’s lineage, honours the cow as divine mother, and preserves indigenous breeds for generations to come.
