Bhootarajara Dhooparathi Seva — the offering of sacred incense and arati lamp before Sri Bhootaraja — is a powerful evening worship at Shri Vadiraja Mandira, Chintamani. To understand this seva, one must know who Bhootaraja is: not merely a guardian deity, but the most devoted servant of Shri Vadirajaru, whose journey spans three lifetimes before he became the eternal kshetra paalaka at Sodhe. Dhooparathi is the classic protective worship offered to such guardians — fragrant dhoopa purifies the atmosphere while the arati lamp dispels darkness and unseen negative forces.
Who Is Bhootaraja?
Bhootaraja is an incarnation of Patrataapa Rudra — the tenth Rudra — who through three births (Tapodhana, Somadatta, and Narayana Sharma) was finally prepared to serve as Vadirajaru’s eternal guardian. When Vadirajaru liberated him from the curse of brahma rakshasa, he blessed him as Bhaavi Rudra and eternal kshetra paalaka at Sodhe. In Madhwa taratamya, Bhootaraja occupies the third tier alongside Garuda, Shesha, and Rudraru — above all Yatis and Dasas — reflecting his unique role as Vadirajaru’s foremost earthly protector.
What Is Dhooparathi?
Dhoopa (incense) and Arati (lamp worship) together form Dhooparathi — one of the most important evening rituals in temple worship. The Agama Shastra lists dhoopa among the Shodasha Upachara; its rising fragrance symbolises prayers ascending to the divine. Arati — circling a lit lamp before the deity — represents the offering of one’s inner light and the banishment of spiritual darkness. For guardian deities like Bhootaraja, evening Dhooparathi maintains the protective boundary of the sacred precinct.
Dhooparathi vs. Narikela Seva
At our temple, two distinct sevas honour Sri Bhootaraja:
- Bhootarajara Narikela Seva (Rs. 150): The consecrated coconut is rolled to the shrine — a unique mode of humble surrender prescribed for Bhootarajaru alone.
- Bhootarajara Dhooparathi Seva (Rs. 501): Incense and arati lamp worship — the traditional evening Bali-style offering to the guardian. Multiple quantities may be booked for successive days or additional protection.
Many devotees perform both sevas: Narikela for obstacle removal through complete surrender, and Dhooparathi for sustained evening protection.
Spiritual Benefits
Bhootarajara Dhooparathi Seva is sought for: protection of home and family; removal of obstacles and adversity; relief from drishti dosha and negative energies; safe travel; freedom from fear and unexplained anxiety; and the grace of Vadirajaru through his most powerful servant-guardian. Saturdays, Amavasya, and Karthika evenings are especially auspicious for guardian worship.
