Sri Gandhalepana Seva – a special sandalwood paste offering performed on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya. Book at Ruju Yogi Foundation.

Description

Sri Gandhalepana Seva is the sacred offering of sandalwood paste (gandha / chandana) to the deity at Shri Bhaavi Sameera Vadiraja Mandira, Chintamani. The word Gandha means fragrance and Lepana means anointing – together describing the ancient ritual of applying sandalwood paste to the deity’s Bimba. Sandalwood is one of the most revered substances in Hindu worship, described in the Vishnu Dharmottara Purana as the substance most cooling and pleasing to Lord Vishnu.

How Gandhalepana Is Performed

The archaka begins with sankalpa in the devotee’s name and gotra. Pure sandalwood paste is prepared by grinding sandalwood on a stone with water – a traditional process that preserves the full fragrance and purity. The paste is then applied to the deity’s Bimba in prescribed patterns while the archaka chants stotras including the Chandana Ashtakam and mantras from the Agama. The cooling, fragrant paste symbolises the devotee’s desire to serve the Lord with the finest natural substances. The seva concludes with Mangala Aarati.

Scriptural Significance of Sandalwood

The Vishnu Sahasranama Bhashya by Shri Madhwacharya refers to the Lord as one who is adorned with sandalwood – reflecting the divine association between fragrance and divinity. The Skanda Purana states that offering chandana to Vishnu during the month of Vaishakha (April–May) or on Akshaya Tritiya confers the merit of a thousand Abhishekas. Sandalwood is also associated with purification – its cooling nature is said to calm the mind and reduce the heat of worldly passions.

Spiritual Benefits

Gandhalepana is recommended for peace of mind, purity of thought, cooling of anger and anxiety, and divine protection. It is especially popular on Akshaya Tritiya, Vaishakha month, and during the hot summer months. Devotees seeking mental calm, clarity in meditation, and freedom from emotional turbulence often choose this seva.

Prasada You Receive

You receive Mantrakshate (consecrated rice), Kumkuma, and Dry Fruit – all blessed through the Gandhalepana offering. Prasada is delivered to your doorstep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sri Gandhalepana Seva?

Gandhalepana is the sacred anointing of the deity with sandalwood paste (chandana), accompanied by mantras and stotras. It is one of the sixteen upacharas (sacred services) in deity worship.

Why is sandalwood considered sacred?

Sandalwood is described in the Vishnu Dharmottara Purana as the substance most cooling and pleasing to Lord Vishnu. Its fragrance purifies the atmosphere, and its cooling nature symbolises the calming of worldly passions and the attainment of inner peace.

When is the best time for Gandhalepana?

Akshaya Tritiya and the month of Vaishakha (April–May) are considered the most auspicious times. The Skanda Purana specifically mentions the merit of offering chandana during these periods. However, the seva can be booked for any date.

Is real sandalwood used?

Yes. The temple uses genuine sandalwood, traditionally ground on a stone with water to produce pure paste. This preserves the full fragrance and sacred properties of the chandana.

Can Gandhalepana help with anger or anxiety?

Yes. Sandalwood is renowned for its cooling and calming properties, both in Ayurveda and in spiritual tradition. Devotees often book Gandhalepana specifically for peace of mind and emotional equilibrium.

How is Gandhalepana different from Abhisheka?

Abhisheka involves pouring liquid substances over the deity (bathing). Gandhalepana is the application of paste (anointing). While Abhisheka uses milk, honey, or ghee, Gandhalepana uses fragrant sandalwood paste applied directly to the Bimba.
